Rising with Him

This Sunday we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord.  In the western states, this feast is celebrated on the Sunday following “Ascension Thursday” for the simple reason that it makes it easier for a larger number of people to attend.

I have sometimes wondered why Jesus had to ascend to the right hand of the Father.  I mean, he is God, he can do whatever he wants.  Why didn’t he stick around for a couple of thousand years?

The answer, I think, is one of logistics.  The Church, indeed the world, is huge.  If Christ promised to be with each member of the Church until the end of the age, then how could that be accomplished if he was still here in the flesh?  How could he be present in all times and in all places to those who believe in him?

If He remained, He could not.  But if He ascended, then the Holy Spirit could descend, the Church could be established, and through the Church, the sacraments, and especially the Eucharist Christ is as truly and substantially present here in St. Andrew Parish in Eagle River as he was to the apostles.

Such is God’s marvelous plan; that the Kingdom of God is truly in our midst.  Christ is same, yesterday, today and forever.  All this is possible because he ascended and the age of grace, the fullness of time could come to fruition.

Parish Assembly – May 18th!
What is a Parish Assembly?  It is an opportunity to hear and interact with members of the Parish Pastoral Advisory Council, Finance Council and Stewardship Council as they bring us up to speed on what’s going on in the parish.  It is a way to communicate and share ideas.  It is very important that all parishioners plan to attend as many things which will affect the life of the parish in the future will be discussed.

Welcome Becky Guerts, New Parish Bookkeeper!
God be praised!  We have a new bookkeeper.  The parish is privileged to have contracted the services of Becky Guerts of B&G Bookkeeping.  Becky brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the position.  Welcome Becky!!
